Root Canal Treatment is a medical term used for a procedure in which the ‘Nerve’ in the roots of the tooth is removed completely because there is infection or swelling in it.

You must be wondering how the nerves present within the solid tooth get infected? The nerves get infected when there is decay in the tooth which if not taken care of in the primary stage, progresses further leaving the nerves exposed, which are then infected by bacteria. The nerves can also get infected due to trauma, or fracture in the tooth or even when tooth is weak due to gum disease.

The infection to nerves causes pain, sensitivity to hot and cold food, swelling and in some cases, there is foul discharge. The only option in such a situation is to remove the nerves and restore the tooth structure with cement and a dental cap.

If you properly brush twice a day, then there will not be any caries and you would never have to go for root canal treatment unless there is an accidental injury.

Root Canal Treatment at Ivory dental clinic in Seawoods, Nerul is done by a root canal specialist with all modern equipment.

If you stay in Navi Mumbai and suffer from severe pain due to carious tooth, then you may require RCT, which can be decided only when you visit a nearby dentist in Navi Mumbai.

Why does a tooth need to undergo a root canal treatment?

The outer portion or crown of a tooth is a three-layered structure namely –

  • Outer Enamel
  • Middle Dentin
  • Inner Pulp

The inner pulp has the blood vessels and nerves and when decay is not arrested, it affects the outer enamel, middle dentin and finally reaches the inner pulp. If the tooth decay is limited to the first two layers, it can be corrected with Filling/ Restoration. In case the tooth decay reaches the third layer (Inner Pulp) and causes inflammation or infection of the pulp, a Root Canal Treatment or Endodontic Treatment is needed.

Root Canal Treatment is done on a damaged or infected tooth. An infection could be due to a cracked or broken tooth, deep decay, gum diseases or may be due to repeated dental treatment on a particular tooth. It becomes extremely important to get the Root Canal Treatment as:

  • It stops the infection from spreading and will then save the tooth from extraction.
  • RCT relieves the pain caused due to inflammation.

Symptoms

  • The most common symptom that one might need Root Canal Treatment is a toothache. The pain can range from mild to severe. With time it may worsen, and you will feel the pain even when you bite your food.
  • The other reason is prolonged sensitivity. If you feel sensations in your tooth while consuming something hot or cold, then there is the slightest chance that one needs to undergo Root Canal Treatment.
  • Swelling in the gums can also be a sign that you need Root Canal Treatment.

What happens if you avoid a Root Canal Treatment?

If the pain in your tooth has subsided, it does not mean that your tooth has healed, but in fact the nerves inside the tooth are dead to cause any pain. The infection however has grown manifold.

The infection from the bacteria can cause further infection to the tissues of the gums and jaws and can in turn cause pus-filled abscess.
